This piece explores the subjugation of women through the lens of Medusa. Batterman uses appropriative methods from Hugues Merle's "Mary Magdalene in the Cave" (1868). Modeling the face of Medusa from Merle's Magdalene, she connects the antiquated Catholic transliteration of history to the patriarchy writ large as Magdalene's legacy becomes purposefully disparaged within biblical narratives. Batterman examines the Medusa myth through a similar contemporary feminist perspective, finding a significant comparison between her decapitation and the silencing of female figures throughout history as they are demonized in a rewritten patriarchal chronology.
